Kate Cherven

My two passions are learning about cultures and understanding the relationship between people, food and the environment.

My personal goal is, through understanding cultures and societies, to connect people to food by developing customer centric marketing strategies, powerful and relevant stories, and identifying opportunities for growth through analysis.

I'm a creative, strategic and critical thinker with a background in food writing, communications, marketing, project management, fundraising and event planning. I am a person who embraces change whilst always striving for excellence with a strong team-first mentality.

My background is in marketing and communications with over 5 years of international experience within the non-profit industries. I look forward to growing my career in Boston while I finish my MLA in Gastronomy part-time at Boston University.

Basu Lounge

Basu Lounge is a tiny, dark restaurant hidden away along the Lake Road strip of shops and it is one of the hidden gems in Takapuna. We visited Basu Lounge because one of our readers said that there is a mini fan debate between Lake Dumplings’ beef noodle soup and the beef noodle soup at Basu Lounge.

Lake Dumplings

Lake Dumplings is a small unassuming restaurant in Takapuna, but it’s a place that all the locals know about. Tucked away in a row of restaurants, Lake Dumplings has a simple entrance with pictures of their dishes posted on their sliding glass door entrance.

Kara Cafe Restaurant

Since I stumbled on Kara Cafe in Milford – it has become my favourite breakfast spot on the Shore. It has taken me a while to do a review on Kara Cafe because I didn’t want too many people to know about it. It’s selfish I know, but I didn’t want it to become another Little King overcrowded weekend brunch place. But they are just so good, I couldn’t keep the secret any longer!

The Loaded Dog

I’ve been told that there is nothing more American than a hot dog and if you’re looking for a hot dog, The Loaded Dog is the place to go. The Loaded Dog isn’t a bells and whistles place, it’s a little shop that brings that Steak 'n Shake feel to New Zealand.

Poké Poké Takapuna

If you’re in Takapuna and need a quick, easy, and healthy bite to eat – the best place to go is Poké Poké. Tucked away in Takapuna, is a semi-new laneway called Fortieth & Hurstmere which I call the ‘Takapuna alleyway’, with a number of delicious restaurants.

Eden Noodles Cafe Albany Branch

The famous Eden Noodles Cafe has recently opened a second location in Albany. They have a slightly smaller menu but if you love the food at Eden Noodles Cafe on Dominion Road as much as us, than you don’t need to read anymore. They are just as amazing on the Shore!

Rosedale Road’s new retail development has heaps of Chinese herbal medicine shops and delicious restaurants including a new branch of Xi’an Food Bar! The development is near the Tai Ping Trading Co. Ltd. and has an array of hidden restaurants that all look and smell fantastic. The car park is packed with big groups of friends and families.
